Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Wednesday said no new investigation commission will be formed over the Pilkhana killings and the government will instead implement the recommendations of the existing national independent commission in phases.
He made the remarks after laying wreaths at Banani Military Graveyard on the occasion of Martyr Army Day.
He said the Pilkhana killings were not only one of the most brutal incidents in Bangladesh but among the most heinous in the world.
He said the then government had formed an inquiry committee to determine the motives behind the massacre, but its findings have not yet been published.
During the interim government, a national independent commission was formed and its report has since been submitted, he said, adding that the previous administration did not take meaningful steps to implement the recommendations.
He said he had earlier made comments without going through the report and now wished to correct himself.
Many of the recommendations in the commission’s report are already under implementation, he said, adding that cases currently under judicial process will be concluded and other recommendations will be implemented gradually.
Addressing the families of the martyrs, he said the Pilkhana killings would be brought to proper justice so that such an incident does not recur in future.
He said the massacre was an attempt to weaken the army and could only have been carried out by those who do not believe in the country’s independence and sovereignty.
