Election authorities in Tangail have cancelled the nomination papers of nine candidates in the first phase of scrutiny for the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
The district administration conducted scrutiny for candidates in four of Tangail’s eight parliamentary constituencies on Friday.
The process ran from 10am to 3.30pm at the office of the deputy commissioner and returning officer.
Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharifa Haque led the scrutiny. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sanjoy Kumar Mahanta, Senior District Election Officer Mohammad Tajul Islam and officials from various departments were present.
Officials cancelled the nomination papers of three candidates in Tangail-1, one in Tangail-2, two in Tangail-3 and three in Tangail-4.
According to the office of the deputy commissioner and returning officer, authorities cancelled the nominations due to inconsistencies in information and other irregularities found during scrutiny.
In Tangail-1, covering Dhanbari and Madhupur, the cancelled candidates are independent contenders Montaz Ali Azad and Mohammad Ali, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominee Md Harun Ur Rashid.
In Tangail-2, covering Bhuapur and Gopalpur, authorities cancelled the nomination of Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Mohammad Monwar Hossain Sagar.
In Tangail-3, Ghatail, the cancelled candidates are independent aspirants Ainin Nahar and Md Shahjahan Mia.
In Tangail-4, Kalihati, authorities cancelled the nominations of Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Ali Amjad Hossain and independent candidates Md Abdul Halim Mia and Md Shah Alam Talukder.
Returning Officer Sharifa Haque said officials completed scrutiny for four constituencies in the first phase.
She said information discrepancies and other issues led to the cancellation of nine nominations.
Authorities declared 18 nominations valid at the same time.
