Nico Williams dedicated Spain’s FIFA World Cup 2026 title to his football idol Neymar after helping his country beat Argentina in the final.
Spain won their second World Cup crown with a 1-0 extra time victory in New York. The win also made Spain the first nation to hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup titles at the same time.
Williams played a key role after coming on as a substitute. The Athletic Club winger set up Ferran Torres for the only goal of the match in extra time.
After the final whistle, the 24-year-old shared an emotional message for Neymar. He said the Brazilian star has always inspired him, even though Brazil were knocked out in the Round of 16.
“I am very happy. This is the best moment of my life. I love Neymar. I hope he was watching us. This victory is for him too,” Williams told Caze TV.
Spain controlled the match from start to finish. They created 20 shots while Argentina managed only three.
The game changed further just before extra time. Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off after a hard challenge on Pau Cubarsi. Spain then took full control with the extra player.
Williams almost scored himself earlier in the match. However, the goal was ruled out after the referee judged that Mikel Merino had fouled Nicolas Otamendi in the build up.
The winning moment came in the second half of extra time. Williams broke down the left wing and crossed for Torres, who finished calmly to seal Spain’s World Cup triumph.
With young stars like Williams and Lamine Yamal leading the way, Spain have shown they have a bright future. The players will now return to their clubs after their holidays before the new season begins.
