Scotland defender Jack Hendry insisted he does not fear Neymar’s return as Brazil prepare for a decisive Group C clash in Miami on Thursday, with both sides still chasing a place in the World Cup knockout rounds.
Neymar has missed Brazil’s opening two matches with injury and has not played a minute at the tournament. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti already indicated that the forward could return for the final group game, which gives the five-time world champions another attacking option ahead of a key fixture.
Scotland head into the match with three points and face a straightforward equation. They need a result to strengthen their hopes of reaching the next round, while Brazil sit top of the group with one win and one draw.
Hendry showed no concern over the prospect of facing Brazil’s all-time leading scorer. The defender said he looked forward to the challenge rather than seeing it as a problem.
“Yes. Neymar is coming back? No problem. I feel comfortable facing Neymar, that’s natural. I’m looking forward to it. It will be a really good battle and if he plays, then I’m waiting for him.”
Hendry does not speak without experience. He faced Neymar in the UEFA Champions League in 2021 when Club Brugge met Paris Saint-Germain. That match finished in a 1-1 draw.
Scotland’s confidence will face a serious test if Neymar returns. Brazil have already placed themselves in a strong position after taking four points from two matches and only need a draw to guarantee progress.
Scotland’s task looks tougher. A defeat could leave them relying on results elsewhere and turn their route to the knockout stage into a difficult one.
For now, Hendry does not seem interested in reputations. He sees another duel and another match that Scotland must handle.
