The newly constructed district modern prison in Khulna has officially started its operation with the transfer of 100 inmates.
The prisoners were moved from the old prison to the new facility on Saturday morning under tight security.
According to prison authorities, three prison vans carrying 100 inmates departed from the old jail on Bhairab Road, Rupsha area at 11am and arrived at the new complex. Upon arrival, the inmates were welcomed with flowers by the prison officials.
The transferred inmates have been accommodated in the first building of the new jail. The remaining prisoners will be moved there in phases.

Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Monir Ahmed, who was present during the transfer, said inmates from the Khulna metropolitan area will now be kept in the new prison.
He added the newly built modern facility includes several service-oriented features for inmates. Once the full workforce recruitment is completed, all remaining prisoners from the old facility will gradually be relocated to the new one.
Jail Superintendent Mohammad Nasir Uddin Pradhan and Jailer Munir Hossain were also present during the transfer.
