A new OTT platform called ‘utshob’ is set to launch in Bangladesh on May 21, aiming to bring a large archive of Bangla films, series and web content to digital audiences at home and abroad.
Positioned under the slogan “Stream the Celebration”, the platform is designed to prioritise Bangla cinema and is expected to offer both new releases and older titles from its catalogue.
From the outset, the platform plans to focus heavily on Bangla-language content, with the aim of building a distinct identity in the growing digital entertainment market.
According to those involved, new films released in cinemas are expected to appear on the platform earlier than on other services, alongside a library of around one hundred films and other content at launch.
Zahid Hasan Abhi, chief executive of the platform, said the goal is to make Bangla content more accessible and engaging for audiences worldwide.
“We want to make Bangla content more accessible and more engaging for viewers. We want to build a platform where Bangla-speaking audiences anywhere in the world can easily watch new films and their preferred content,” he said.
He added that declining cinema hall numbers and limited access to theatres in many districts have reduced opportunities for audiences to watch new films.
He also said that although Bangla films are released internationally, many viewers living abroad still struggle to access new releases easily, which the platform aims to address.
He noted that the number of viewers for Bangla films and content has increased globally in recent years, but there has been a lack of a reliable and convenient digital platform to serve that audience.
The service will operate on a subscription model, allowing users to access films, series and exclusive content from anywhere in the world.
Initially, viewers will be able to access the platform through its website. Later, it will be available as a mobile application on Google Play, followed by support for iOS, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Samsung smart TVs.
