A case has been filed against five Rajshahi University students over an alleged attack on the office of Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (Rucsu) General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar.
Ammar filed the case with Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s courton Monday.
The accused are Md Anas of the History Department, Mahmud Hasan Mahin and Mamun Mia of the Sanskrit Department, Mahfuzul Islam Nayan of the Tourism and Hospitality Management Department, and Azharul Islam of the Islamic Studies Department. Seven to eight unidentified people were also named as accused.
According to the case statement, the accused allegedly entered Ammar’s room, 202, on the second floor of the Rucsu building around noon on 27 July carrying locally made weapons.
They allegedly abused Ammar and behaved aggressively with him. When he protested, they allegedly assaulted him, the statement said.
The accused also allegedly vandalised chairs, tables and other office furniture, causing damage estimated at around Tk1 lakh, according to the case petition.
It further said Rucsu Information and Research Secretary Nazmus Sakib and Mehedi were assaulted when they protested the attack.
At one point, Anas allegedly attacked Sakib with an iron rod. Sakib suffered a bleeding injury to his right hand while trying to block the blow, the petition said.
When Mehedi tried to protect Sakib, Mahin allegedly hit him on the left ear with a stick, leaving him injured, according to the statement.
Explaining why he filed the case, Ammar said his secretaries had been attacked and he wanted to ensure the matter was formally recorded.
“My secretaries were attacked. It is just a matter of concern for me. The government could later play a game over this. That is why I filed the case involving my secretaries,” he said.
Ammar’s lawyer, Md Salahuddin, confirmed the case on Tuesday afternoon.
He said the court assigned the investigation to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) on the same day the case was filed.
The accused have been charged under several sections of the Penal Code, including Sections 323, 326, 307, 341, 348, 324 and 427.
