A massive fireball at the Kennedy Space Centre has raised critical questions over whether Blue Origin can fulfil its commitments to NASA’s lunar programme.
The aerospace company’s New Glenn rocket exploded at approximately 21:00 local time during a routine engine test.
While the explosion was visually devastating, Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos confirmed on X that no injuries occurred. “All personnel are accounted for and safe,” Bezos stated, acknowledging a “very rough day” but pledging to rebuild.
Extensive damage to unique launch facility
The blast, which tore through Space Launch Complex 36 (LC-36), has caused significant structural damage. Footage from the site shows a lightning protection tower toppling in the aftermath.
Crucially, LC-36 is the only facility in the world equipped to launch the 98-metre New Glenn rocket. Analysts expect the rocket to be grounded for months while the pad undergoes rebuilding and re-certification.
Commercial blow to Amazon’s Project Kuiper
The incident represents a major setback for Amazon’s LEO broadband network, formerly known as Project Kuiper.
The destroyed vehicle had been scheduled to launch 48 satellites as early as 4 June in an effort to compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink service.
Amazon is currently under pressure from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to have half of its 3,236-satellite constellation in orbit by 30 July 2026.
As of late May, the company was already more than 1,300 satellites short of this target.
With New Glenn grounded, Amazon will become increasingly reliant on rival providers, such as SpaceX, and will likely require a fresh extension from the FCC.
Crisis for NASA’s ‘permanent presence’ plans
The ramifications extend to NASA’s plans for a “permanent presence” at the Moon’s south pole.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman recently announced three missions for this goal, the first of which, Moon Base 1, is targeted for autumn 2026.
This mission depends on Blue Origin’s robotic Blue Moon Mark 1 “Endurance” lander, which was intended to launch aboard a New Glenn rocket.
The explosion also threatens a $468m contract for two commercial lunar terrain vehicles built by Astrolab and Lunar Outpost.
These rovers are meant to be positioned at the lunar south pole by 2028, ahead of planned crewed landings.
Additionally, the Artemis III mission, scheduled for next year as a flight test for landers from both Blue Origin and SpaceX, is now facing inevitable delays.
Before the accident, Blue Origin was considered more prepared than SpaceX, as its Mark 1 demonstrator was already in final stacking.
Geopolitical pressure and industry reaction
NASA now faces a tightening schedule as China moves forward with plans to land astronauts on the Moon by 2030.
Responding to the setback, Isaacman noted that “spaceflight is unforgiving” and that developing heavy-lift capabilities is “extraordinarily difficult”.
However, his drive to increase the frequency of NASA’s lunar launches is now under serious scrutiny.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk also commented on the footage of the blast, describing the event as “most unfortunate” and remarking that “rockets are hard”.
