After resigning on Tuesday, Nepal’s prime minister KP Sharma Oli has fled the country in a helicopter after facing intense anti-corruption protests led by Generation Z. Reuters confirmed the matter through Oli’s assistant, Prakash Silwal.
Oli’s resignation came two days after violent protests erupted in Kathmandu, with at least 19 casualties. The protests were sparked by widespread discontent over corruption.
Before his resignation, Oli spoke with Nepal’s Chief of Army Staff, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, requesting military assistance to safely exit the country. Rumors suggest he may seek refuge in Dubai or India.
According to Indian media outlet India Today, General Sigdel urged Oli to step down, stating that the army would only intervene to restore stability if Oli voluntarily resigned. The military is prepared to take control of the country once the resignation occurs.
This unrest follows the government’s decision on September 4 to block 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube.
What began as a peaceful protest on September 8 turned violent when demonstrators attempted to breach barricades and enter the parliament’s restricted area.
Police responded with baton charges, and the government imposed a curfew in Kathmandu to control the situation. Protesters have labeled this movement the “Gen-Z Revolution.”
