Abidul Islam Khan, vice president (VP) candidate from the BNP-backed Chhatra Dal panel in the DUCSU election, has expressed confidence that pro-liberation student forces will secure a landslide victory if the elections are held fairly.
He urged everyone to remain vigilant and observant from their respective positions.
Speaking at a press conference at Dhaka University on Tuesday following the day’s voting, Abidul alleged multiple irregularities during polling, including obstruction of his party’s polling agents and preferential treatment toward the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
“Despite a declared restriction on outsiders, I witnessed several individuals from outside the university roaming campus freely,” said Abidul. “Some identified themselves as local leaders, others said they had come from districts like Kurigram. One individual named Qasem, known for his Jamaat affiliation, was seen moving about the campus throughout the day.”
He further alleged that under the guise of “security passes,” leaders and activists of Jamaat and Shibir were allowed to enter the university from outside – a claim he said raises serious concerns about the neutrality of the election.
Abidul emphasized that his panel is committed to building a peaceful, inclusive, and democratic campus. However, he warned that any attempt to manipulate the vote count or disrupt the electoral process would be firmly resisted by general students.
“If there is even the slightest effort to distort the voting result or allow anti-liberation forces, those who oppose Bangladesh’s sovereignty, freedom of expression, and student rights, to manipulate this election, then the student community will stand united in resistance,” he declared.
He also alleged that Jamaat-Shibir activists had taken positions in areas surrounding the campus such as Nilkhet, Katabon, and Chankharpul. Abidul called on the university administration and the state to take immediate action to clear such disruptive elements.
