National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain has surrendered and secured bail with a bond of Tk 1,500 in two separate cases filed with Shahbagh Police Station in the capital. He is facing allegations of attempted murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and obstructing government work.
Following a hearing on Sunday afternoon, the courts of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Awlad Hossain Mohammad Junaid and Jashita Islam passed the order.
Akhtar Hossain’s counsel, Md Mujahidur Islam, confirmed the matter. He said Akhtar surrendered before the court in connection with two cases filed in 2021 and sought bail. After the hearing, two separate courts granted him bail on bonds of Tk 500 and Tk 1,000 respectively, totalling Tk 1,500.
Speaking before the hearing, Akhtar Hossain said a total of six cases had been filed against him during the tenure of the ousted Awami government.
Of those, he has already been acquitted in four cases, while he secured bail in the remaining two by surrendering in court on Sunday.
According to the case statements, three separate cases were filed against Akhtar Hossain at Shahbagh Police Station in 2021 in connection with protests against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh.
Akhtar said he was arrested from in front of the Shaheed Minar on 13 April, 2021, in two cases related to the anti-Modi movement during the tenure of the previous Awami government. A total of three cases were filed over that incident, one of which he was acquitted from on 11 September.
He also mentioned that on 7 October, 2022, he, along with 24 others, was detained after coming under attack by Chhatra League activists during a memorial programme for Abrar Fahad. They were later arrested by police from Dhaka Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment.
In addition, during the July uprising, Akhtar Hossain was detained on 17 July from in front of the Raju Sculpture centring the funeral of Abu Sayeed. Later, a case was filed against him under the Explosives Act at Shahbagh Police Station.
In total, six cases were filed against Akhtar Hossain. Of those, he has been acquitted in four, while he obtained bail on Sunday from the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in the remaining two cases related to the anti-Modi movement.
