The NCP has temporarily postponed its scheduled July marc’ in Manikganj following an alleged attack on party leaders and activists in Habiganj on Tuesday that left several people, including Sarjis Alam, injured.
The programme, part of the party’s nationwide initiative, was scheduled to be held in Manikganj at 5:30 pm on Wednesday.
However, the central leadership decided to postpone it because of the volatile situation in Habiganj.
Md Ariful Islam, organising secretary of the NCP’s Manikganj district unit, confirmed the decision on Tuesday night.
He said party Convener Nahid Islam and southern regional Chief Organiser Hasnat Abdullah, who were expected to lead the Manikganj march, were instead travelling to Habiganj to deal with the aftermath of the unrest.
The postponement came following reports of violence in Habiganj on Tuesday, where NCP leaders alleged that Chhatra Dal activists attacked them after their July march.
According to party sources, at least six to seven people were injured, including Sarjis Alam, the NCP’s chief organiser for the northern region.
Several vehicles used by journalists covering the event were also reportedly vandalised.
“Due to the emergency situation, the Manikganj programme has been suspended for the time being,” Ariful said.
He added that a new date and time for the march would be announced once the situation stabilised and the central committee issued further instructions.
Party leaders said the rescheduled programme would depend on the overall situation and subsequent decisions by the central leadership.
