A convoy carrying National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders came under attack in Sylhet’s Golapganj upazila on Thursday afternoon, leaving one vehicle damaged.
No one was injured in the incident, police said.
The incident took place around 2:45pm in front of Noor Mansion near the Golapganj municipality gate, shortly after NCP leaders concluded a programme at the municipal auditorium.
NCP northern region’s chief coordinator Sarjis Alam alleged that the attackers were BNP activists.
BNP has not made any official comment on the allegation.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, NCP central leaders were leaving Golapganj after meeting families of people killed during the July uprising in 2024.
They were heading towards Kanaighat when a group of youths surrounded their convoy and started protesting.
The group reportedly chanted slogans including “fake, fake” and “NCP is fake”. Local sources claimed that some of those involved were activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the BNP.
The situation turned tense when several youths moved towards the vehicles. At one point, bricks and stones were allegedly thrown at a vehicle, breaking its glass.
Police later reached the spot, brought the situation under control and helped the NCP convoy leave the area.
Golapganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shabed Ali said no one was injured in the incident.
“The vehicle was vandalised, but no one was hurt. The NCP leaders left Golapganj safely,” he said.
NCP leaders’ visit to Golapganj
NCP leader Sarjis Alam and other central leaders visited Golapganj on Wednesday afternoon to meet families of those killed during the July uprising in 2024, according to party sources.
Before the leaders arrived, a group of local Chhatra Dal activists had gathered in the Golapganj Chowmuhani area, local sources said.
When the NCP convoy entered the area, protesters allegedly raised slogans against the party before the leaders attended their programme at the municipal auditorium.
After the incident, Sarjis Alam claimed in a post on his verified Facebook page that BNP activists had attacked and vandalised their vehicle.
