The National Citizen Party (NCP) has strongly condemned the ongoing cyber harassment and smear campaigns targeting its Joint Convener and Secretary of the Election Management Committee, Monira Sharmin.
In a press release issued on Friday, the party stated that the “ugly, misogynistic, and insulting” remarks and planned cyber-attacks directed at Sharmin on social media have exceeded the limits of legitimate political criticism.
NCP described these actions as a “gross attempt” to personally humiliate a female leader and weaken her political standing.
The party emphasised that while differences of opinion are a natural and beautiful part of democratic politics, the use of misinformation, personal attacks, and character assassination cannot be considered a part of political discourse.
Such tactics, NCP argued, are desperate attempts to mask a lack of logic, political capability, and ideological strength.
The party further mentioned that those involved in such propaganda do not believe in democratic politics, relying instead on fear-mongering and slander to suppress political opponents.
NCP noted that the public identifies these individuals as “political opportunists” and “evil forces” intent on destroying social and political unity.
Describing Monira Sharmin as a “responsible and conscious political organiser,” the statement highlighted her consistent work for unity-based democratic politics and her use of sophisticated language.
NCP believes her visible role as an active female leader has caused discomfort for certain groups, which is the root cause of the ongoing smear campaign.
It warned that if personal attacks and cyber harassment against women in politics continue, it will pose a “serious threat” to female participation and the safety of the political environment.
NCP stated it would not tolerate the politics of suppressing women through intimidation and propaganda.
The party called upon the relevant authorities to take effective legal and political action against those involved in these cyber-attacks. It also urged all political forces to ensure that opposition is based on logic, debate, and principles, rather than slander and rumours.
NCP concluded that establishing competitive, responsible, and decent politics, along with ensuring the protection of female leadership, remains a “collective duty and responsibility.”
