National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam has alleged that the ongoing July Charter process is being portrayed as a national consensus while keeping the people out of the discussion.
Speaking at the launch of the party’s labour wing, Jatiya Sramikshakti, on Friday morning, he said, “A few political parties signing the July Charter cannot be called national unity. A meeting between some parties does not represent the will of the nation.”
He said that on a historic day like this, “deception is taking place in the name of national consensus”, while the newly formed labour wing has taken to the streets with the workers’ demands. Factories are burning and yet the life of a worker is being valued at just Tk 2 to 3 lakh, he said, adding that such a system cannot be called justice.
True national unity, he said, means a platform where workers and people from different professions come together for the welfare of the country. “But there has been no discussion on the labour commission or the health sector. The reform commission has focused only on elections, and there is no positive sign for democracy there,” he said.
He further alleged that powerful groups who thrived during the fascist period have not been brought under justice. “Instead, their businesses are being protected. They exploited workers. Jatiya Sramikshakti will stand beside those who keep the economy running,” he said.
