National University (NU) administration has inaugurated its regional centre in Mymensingh today as part of an initiative to streamline communication with affiliated colleges and reduce session jams by expediting administrative tasks, admissions, examinations, and the publication of results.
The university administration is currently establishing regional centres in divisional cities and key areas to decentralise its operations. On Thursday morning, the Mymensingh regional centre was officially opened at House No. 1, Aiub Bari Bye-lane Road, Madhya Barera, Amritala.
National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Lutfur Rahman inaugurated the centre by releasing pigeons and balloons. The ceremony included the hoisting of the national flag and the performance of the national anthem.
This new centre will facilitate all types of university-related services for affiliated colleges and professional institutes across Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Sherpur, and Netrokona districts.
Following the inauguration, a discussion programme was held at the Advocate Tareq Memorial Auditorium at Mymensingh Town Hall, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah. Professor Md Lutfur Rahman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of NU; Md Kamrul Hassan, Member of Parliament for Mymensingh-6; Md Rukunuzzaman Rokon, Administrator of Mymensingh City Corporation; and Professor AKM Shafiqul Islam, Convener of Mymensingh City BNP, addressed the event as special guests.
The welcome address was delivered by Md Aminul Akhtar, Director of the Regional Centre Coordination Office. The programme was moderated by Momtaz Jahan, Associate Professor of the Social Work Department at Ananda Mohan College, Mymensingh.
Speakers at the event noted that the commencement of the Mymensingh regional centre would make services for students, teachers, and stakeholders in the region easier, faster, and more effective.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah stated that the National University is implementing various initiatives to improve the quality of education and make higher education more career-oriented. He remarked that students would soon reap the benefits of these efforts.
He further emphasised that long-term planning and increased research—which are resource-intensive—are essential to utilising the education sector for national development.
To ensure and sustain the country’s future growth, he urged the government to allocate at least three per cent of the GDP to the education sector in the national budget.
