A week after dissolving the advisory committee on the National Board of Revenue (NBR) reforms, the government has formed “National Taskforce” to reorganise tax structure.

The Internal Resources Division (IRD) of the finance ministry announced the formation of the taskforce by issuing an order on Monday.

Economist and Policy Research Institute (PRI) Chairman Dr Zaidi Sattar will head the nine-member taskforce.

It will also propose short-and long-term measures for a tax policy that supports overall economic growth as well as domestic and foreign trade.

The taskforce includes economists, government officials, and representatives from two professional bodies – the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB) and the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB).

The taskforce has been instructed to submit its report with recommendations to the finance adviser by 31 January 2026.

Earlier, on September 28, the government abruptly announced the dissolution of the NBR Reform Advisory Committee, a move that reportedly surprised stakeholders and experts involved in the reform process.
