Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Gazipur, celebrated “National Library Day 2026” on Thursday with the theme “Knowledge is Freedom/Foundation of the Future.”
The university’s Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohammad Zoynal Abedin inaugurated the event as the chief guest at a programme organised by the Central Library.
During the discussion session, Dr Abedin stated that universities are the primary locations for the production and distribution of knowledge, while libraries serve as the essential repositories for that knowledge.
He emphasised that libraries play a vital role in guiding the younger generation toward enlightenment by fostering research in science and technology, cultural practices, and the development of values to build a discrimination-free country.
The vice-chancellor further noted that all necessary measures have been taken to modernise the DUET Central Library with contemporary reading materials. During the event, he unveiled two albums dedicated to the “Liberation War Corner” and the “Bijoy-2024 Corner.”
He expressed hope that these albums would help future generations learn the accurate history of the Great Liberation War and the July mass uprising while contributing to the advancement of science and technology.
Additionally, Professor Abedin inaugurated a book issuance service via Koha ILS software, which is expected to make resource management, cataloging, and reporting more efficient and dynamic.
He also provided instructions to establish a “DUET Corner” to preserve the history of the university’s glorious journey since its inception.
The program was chaired by DUET Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Md Arefin Kawsar, who remarked that there is no alternative to the pursuit of knowledge to take a nation to the pinnacle of development.
He urged everyone to visit the library frequently to read books in a pleasant environment and transform themselves into enlightened human beings through excellence in education and research.
Dr Kawsar assured that the DUET administration would continue its sincere cooperation in improving the overall quality and infrastructure of the library.
The discussion session began with a welcome speech by the Librarian (Additional Charge), Dr Md Abdur Rahman Farhad. Special guests included the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Professor Dr Ruma; Registrar (Additional Charge), Dr Md Abu Taieb; Director of Student Welfare, Dr Utpal Kumar Das; and Chairman of the ICT Cell Dr Fazlul Hasan Siddiqui.
Moderated by Deputy Librarian Md Abu Awal Siddique, the event was attended by various faculty deans, department heads, directors, office heads, teachers, students, and staff of the university.
