A moderate cold wave has gripped Naogaon with intense chill. The district recorded a low of 6.7 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning. This is the minimum temperature in the country so far this season, according to the Badalgachhi Agricultural Weather Observatory in Naogaon.
Local sources said that since late Tuesday night, the entire district has been blanketed in thick fog. Along with the biting cold wind blowing from the north, the chill has become severe.
For the past two days, the sun appeared during the daytime, bringing some relief, but as evening approached, the temperature dropped rapidly. As the night deepened, the intensity of the cold took on a frightening scale.
With the sudden increase in cold, the worst sufferers have been the homeless and low-income working people. Lacking sufficient winter clothing, their daily work and lives have become unbearable in this freezing weather. Agricultural labourers and rickshaw pullers, who head out early in the morning for work, are facing extreme hardship.
Meanwhile, a moderate cold wave has been sweeping across Chuadanga. Bone-chilling winds and dense fog have disrupted public life. The district’s temperature is dropping day by day, leaving people of all walks of life helpless against the cold. The lowest temperature recorded in Chuadanga was 6.9 degrees Celsius around 6am.
Jaminnur Rahman, an official at the Chuadanga Weather Office, said that the temperature has been fluctuating between 7 and 9 degrees Celsius. Around 9am, the lowest temperature was recorded at 6.9 degrees Celsius, while humidity stood at 97 percent.
The temperature was 7.5 degrees Celsius around 6am on Tuesday. Due to the cold winds and fog, the chill feels even more intense. Daytime temperatures are falling, and most of the time the sun remains hidden.
Every afternoon, the number of people on the streets is seen too thin because of the cold. Unless necessary, residents are avoiding going outdoors. Both day and night, icy winds continue to blow.
When the minimum temperature in any area ranges between 8.1 and 10 degrees Celsius, it is called a mild cold wave. If the temperature is between 6.1 and 8 degrees Celsius, it is considered a moderate cold wave. When the temperature falls between 4.1 and 6 degrees Celsius, it is classified as a severe cold wave. And if the temperature drops below 4 degrees Celsius, it is termed an extreme cold wave.
