A housewife died under unexplained circumstances in Nalta of Kaliganj upazila in Satkhira on Tuesday afternoon.
The victim was identified as 50-year-old Momena Khatun, wife of Bhai Bhai Hardware owner Moynuddin Gazi of Nalta Bazar. Police have detained Moynuddin for questioning.
Moynuddin said he returned home from his shop around 1:30pm for lunch and found the outer gate locked.
After failing to locate his wife, he brought a hammer from the shop and, with the help of his cousin brother-in-law, broke the lock. He said he found Momena lying on the floor with a towel and scarf around her neck and immediately alerted neighbours.
Momena’s brother, Abdul Aziz, alleged that quarrels between the couple were frequent and that his sister was beaten at times. He suspects she may have been killed following a dispute.
Kaliganj Police Station officer-in-charge Jewel Hossain said the body had been recovered and taken to the police station, and the husband was being interrogated.
He said legal action would follow once the investigation uncovers the true circumstances of the death.
