A young man was reportedly beaten to death and his body set on fire in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka upazila over religious derogatory comment.
The attack was allegedly carried out by members of the group ‘Towhidi Janata.’
The incident occurred around 9pm on Thursday at the Pioneer Knitwears (BD) Ltd factory.
The victim, Dipu Chandra Das, was a worker at the factory. His father is Ravi Chandra Das, and the family is from Tarakanda upazila in Mymensingh.
Following the attack, the enraged mob took the victim’s body to the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway, set it on fire, and blocked traffic in both directions, sparking widespread tension in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident began after allegations surfaced against the factory worker regarding derogatory remarks about the Prophet. Tensions escalated at the factory, and the mob reportedly beat Dipu Chandra Das to death.
A video footage, that has gone viral on social shows Dipu being forced to the ground and beaten. Later, his naked body was tied to a tree, further assaulted, and set ablaze.
Bhaluka Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jahidul Islam told Times of Bangladesh that no formal complaint has yet been lodged by the victim’s family. “Once a complaint is filed, legal action will be taken,” he said.
