Tech billionaire Elon Musk-owned xAI has launched a new artificial intelligence-powered online encyclopedia called Grokipedia. Grokipedia 0.1 is currently live as a website, allowing users to search for articles. The new site is viewed as a direct rival to Wikipedia, the world’s most popular encyclopedia.
Unlike Wikipedia, Musk’s platform currently does not permit human users to edit information or add context or sources to its articles. So, it’s unclear how Grokipedia articles are put together.
Although only the beta version has been released, it’s already facing criticism. According to The Verge, Grokipedia provides information directly from Wikipedia, the platform it’s supposed to rival. “The content is adapted from Wikipedia,” the webpages that take information carries this message.
Musk announced the launch of his new platform via an X (formerly Twitter) post. He highlighted the current version of the encyclopedia as version 0.1. He wrote, “Version 1.0 will be 10X better, but even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia.” In another X post, Musk states the goal of Grokipedia is to provide “truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” He also mentioned that the goal is hard to achieve, but the team will work towards attaining it.
