Indian singer and music researcher Moushumi Bhowmik paid tribute to Baul artiste Sunil Karmakar at a memorial programme held in Mymensingh, reflecting on his artistic influence and spiritual outlook.
The event, titled ‘Sunil Aloy Baul Sur’, was held at the Town Hall on April 24 and ran from afternoon into the night, bringing together performers, researchers and cultural figures. Bhowmik spoke about her long association with Sunil Karmakar and the lasting impression his music left on her work.
Recalling her first encounter with him during a research visit in 2006, she said she initially came to the region to study Bengali folk traditions. She described how hearing his voice made a deep impact even before she formally met him.
Moushumi Bhowmik also shared memories from recording sessions, noting that she preserved not only his songs but also the ambient sounds and conversations that formed part of the creative process.
Paying tribute to his outlook on life, she described him as a seeker beyond religious boundaries and highlighted the inclusive spirit reflected in his music.
The programme featured discussions on Karmakar’s contribution to Baul traditions, followed by performances from Baul artistes and disciples.
Moushumi Bhowmik also performed a short segment of a song associated with him, which was warmly received by the audience.
