A court in Pirojpur on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment and his mother to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for killing a motorcyclist and concealing his body in Nesarabad upazila eight years ago.
District and Sessions Judge Md Mujibur Rahman delivered the verdict in the afternoon.
The convicts are Tazim, 28, son of Siddiqur Rahman of Sohagdal village under Nesarabad, and his mother Mosammat Rehana Begum, 50.
The court also fined Tazim Tk10,000, in default, he will have to serve an additional six months in jail for the murder of motorcyclist Milon Bahadur.
Tazim was also sentenced separately for concealing the body.
His mother Rehana Begum was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk5,000, in default, has to serve additional three months’ jail, for her role in hiding the body. She was present in court during the verdict, while Tazim remains absconding.
According to court documents, on 10 February, 2018, Tazim and another youth hired Milon along with his motorcycle for a ride-sharing trip from the Boyarhula motorbike stand. When Milon failed to return home that night, his family began searching for him, while his mobile phone remained switched off.
On 12 February, Milon’s father Shahadat Bahadur filed a general diary with Nesarabad Police Station.
Two days later, on 14 February, police recovered his body from a septic tank at Tazim’s residence.
Investigators later found that Milon was murdered and his body was concealed with assistance from Tazim’s mother.
Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a murder case against five individuals. Police later submitted a charge sheet against four accused after investigation. During Thursday’s ruling, the court acquitted two of the accused.
