A mother and her son died after being electrocuted at Matlab Dakshin Upazila of Chandpur on Tuesday night, casting a pall of grief over the area.

The incident took place at the Khan Bari in South Nalua village.

The deceased were Amena Begum Rina, 65, wife of the late Shahadat Khan, and her son Enamul Haque Russell Khan, 35.

Family members said preparations were underway to lift irrigation water using a shallow machine at their newly built homestead, located about 500 yards north of their house. To power the machine, Enamul Haque Russell attempted to take a direct connection from an electric pole beside the road.

During the attempt, he accidentally came into contact with live electricity and was electrocuted. Amena Begum rushed to save her son but also came into contact with the current.

Within moments, both bodies caught fire and they died on the spot.

On information, Assistant Superintendent of Police Jabir Husnain Sanib and Officer-in-Charge of Matlab South Police Station Md Hafizur Rahman Manik visited the scene.

Police prepared the inquest report and completed the necessary legal formalities.

The OC said police initially consider the incident an accident. As the family filed no complaint, the bodies were handed over to relatives upon their request.
