A court in Tangail has sentenced a woman to 13 years of rigorous imprisonment for killing her newborn and attempting to dispose of the body.
Judge Md Hafizur Rahman of Special Tribunal-1 in Tangail delivered the verdict on Monday.
The convict, Aina Begum, 24, is the wife of Md Zahirul Islam of Shibpur Chandanpara village under Mirzapur upazila and daughter of Aminul Islam of Lauhati Madhyapara village under Delduar upazila.
According to the court, she was sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for murdering her 18-day-old son and an additional three years for concealing the body.
The sentences will run consecutively, bringing the total term to 13 years.
She was also fined Tk40,000, in default of which she will serve six more months in prison.
Public Prosecutor Shafiqur Islam Ripon said Aina Begum had been staying at her father’s house following the birth of her child.
On 30 August, 2020, around 11am, her husband was informed that their 18-day-old son was missing.
He later went to his in-laws’ house and, during a search, found the child’s body in a nearby canal.
Police recovered the body after being informed.
An autopsy report confirmed that the infant, named Raihan, had been strangled.
Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a murder case against Aina Begum with Delduar Police Station.
After investigation, Sub-Inspector Monwar Hossain submitted the charge sheet to court.
The trial began on 15 December, 2020 after charges were framed, and testimony from nine witnesses was recorded before the verdict was delivered.
Following the judgment, the convict was sent to jail.
