Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to prioritise his medical recovery following the conclusion of his 26-day hunger strike.
In a message posted on the social media platform X, Modi urged the activist to strictly adhere to doctors’ advice in his daily routine to regain his health and weight as quickly as possible. “I pray to the Almighty for his good health,” the prime minister stated in his message.
Beyond his message to the activist, Modi released a video statement on Wednesday night promising “more strict actions” to address the issue of paper leaks, which has been a focal point of recent protests, reports NDTV.
Describing the situation as “very painful” for lakhs of students and their families, he said paper leaks are not an ordinary issue and confirmed that many culprits have already been apprehended and jailed.
Modi emphasised that the government’s primary responsibility is to ensure that students do not lose an academic year. To this end, he has issued instructions to relevant departments for the implementation of fast-track courts to handle these cases efficiently.
According to the prime minister, a formal discussion regarding the structure of these fast-track courts is scheduled for the Cabinet.
Following this review, the government intends to finalise the proposal and move to have a relevant bill passed in Parliament as early as the coming week.
