Seven teachers of Cumilla Government Women’s College have been transferred to colleges in Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet, Barguna and other districts after waterlogging disrupted an HSC examination centre at the institution.
All were involved in the management of the 2026 Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination centre.
The transfers were announced in a letter signed by Md A Kuddus, Deputy Secretary of the Government College-2 Branch under the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education, on Thursday.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Education initially attached the teachers to the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education as officers on special duty (OSD) before posting them to different government colleges. They have been asked to be released from their current workplace by 29 July.
According to college sources, this is the first time that so many teachers have been transferred from the institution at the same time.
Under the transfer order, Vice-Principal AKM Zahirul Alam has been posted to Chiora Government College in Chauddagram as a teacher of Islamic History and Culture. Professor Md Abdul Malek of the Mathematics Department has been transferred to Cox’s Bazar Government College, Associate Professor Kanak Barua of the Botany Department to Hatiya Island Government College in Noakhali, Associate Professor Muhammad Ullah Majumdar of the Islamic History and Culture Department to Lakshmipur Government College, Assistant Professor Nur Mohammad Nur Ullah of the Political Science Department to Nabinagar Government College in Brahmanbaria, Lecturer Md Al-Amin of the Accounting Department to Beanibazar Government College in Sylhet, and Associate Professor Mohammad Mohsin of the English Department to Barguna Government College.
Among them, Vice-Principal Zahirul Alam was not involved in examination management as his son is sitting this year’s HSC examinations. Abdul Malek, the junior-most professor, was assigned as the acting officer after senior teachers declined to take responsibility. Kanak Barua served as convener of the examination committee, while Mohammad Mohsin is secretary of the college teachers’ council.
On 18 July, Comilla-6 MP Monirul Haque Chowdhury visited the college and expressed dissatisfaction over the waterlogging and examination management. During a meeting with teachers, he said the incident had tarnished the image of the government and the education minister.
Teachers, however, said the college had served as an examination centre since its establishment and that although heavy morning rain caused waterlogging, no candidate was absent and the examinations were held on schedule.
A Ministry of Education official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said transfers were a routine administrative matter and the ministry had the authority to transfer any official.
The college campus was flooded on the morning of 13 July following heavy rainfall. At the time, Comilla City Corporation Administrator Md Yusuf Molla Tipu arranged dinghies and vans to transport examinees to the centre with the assistance of the Bibek voluntary organisation, while college teachers helped escort students to the examination halls.
