Police in Lalmonirhat’s Hatibandha were reportedly forced to release a suspected drug dealer on Saturday after being surrounded and obstructed by a mob of the suspect’s relatives and local residents.
Police and locals said a team from Hatibandha Police Station detained Hamidul, accused in several narcotics‑related cases.
As officers attempted to take him into custody, his relatives and residents blocked their way. The situation escalated until additional police personnel arrived.
Officer‑in‑charge (OC) Ramzan Ali later visited the scene. He confirmed Hamidul’s criminal record and said legal action is being taken against those who incited the mob and obstructed police duties.
The incident has sparked concern among locals.
Zaidul Huq, a resident, alleged that drug traffickers have built a strong syndicate in Hatibandha and are attempting to influence the administration.
He claimed similar incidents had occurred previously and called for strict legal measures against those involved.
