Former England defender Micah Richards has revealed that he learned of his father’s death shortly before going on air as a BBC pundit for England’s World Cup semifinal against Argentina.
Richards, who earned 13 caps for England during his playing career, appeared alongside Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney as Thomas Tuchel’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat in Atlanta.
After the broadcast, Richards shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, saying his father, Lincoln, had died unexpectedly.
“Not long before going on air today, I received the awful news that my father Lincoln had passed away. His death was unexpected, and he has left us all too soon,” Richards wrote.
He paid tribute to his father, describing him as his “greatest fan.”
“He was my greatest fan. He barely missed a game my entire life.”.
Richards did not disclose further details about the circumstances surrounding his father’s death.
The 37-year-old former Manchester City defender has become one of British football’s most recognisable broadcasters since retiring from playing. His announcement prompted an outpouring of condolences from fellow players, pundits and fans on social media.
