Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) Managing Director Faruque Ahmed has said metro rail ridership has dropped by an average of 10 percent following the bearing pad incident.
He disclosed this information at a press conference held at Diabari Metrorail Building in Uttara on Monday.
An average of 4,60,000 passengers traveled daily, and the number now remains around 4,00,000, he said.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, train operations were halted after 8pm following an incident at the Secretariat Metrorail Station where a teenager climbed onto the roof through the gap between two metro rail coaches.
Regarding this, Faruque said, “As soon as we learned that a boy had climbed onto the roof, our security immediately brought him down. By Allah’s grace, no harm occurred.”
Furthermore, CCTV cameras will be installed at the entry points under the metro stations to increase security measures.
He told reporters that the 5.7 magnitude earthquake on 21 November did not cause any damage to the metro rail. The service was delayed for public safety on that day.
He further said, “Every day before starting public service, we run a sweeper train to check everything, but we ran two sweepers after the earthquake. That is why it was late.”
