Lionel Messi’s tears after scoring for Argentina at the World Cup were linked to a personal crisis, with his father Jorge subsequently confirmed to be receiving hospital treatment in Argentina.
Messi scored in Argentina’s 3-0 Group J victory over Algeria before wiping away tears with his shirt during his celebration. Speaking after the match, he addressed the moment directly. “The tears were due to something completely unrelated to football,” he said. “I have had a personally difficult few days.”
Reports later confirmed the cause of his distress. According to The Sun, Jorge was admitted to hospital in January after his condition deteriorated, undergoing several medical tests including heart examinations, with his health said to have declined further in the weeks leading up to the tournament. The family subsequently issued a statement on 18 June confirming Jorge is recovering and progressing favourably under medical supervision, though they did not disclose the nature of the illness. A source close to the family told Reuters he remains in a delicate condition.
The family pushed back firmly against press coverage, stating that the health of an individual and the wellbeing of those around them should not be subject to speculation or irresponsible media interest.
The situation is believed to have weighed heavily on Messi throughout his World Cup preparations. Jorge has been a central figure in his son’s life and career from the very beginning, identifying his talent early and supporting his move to Barcelona’s La Masia academy. He also helped secure the medical treatment Messi required for his growth hormone deficiency during childhood, and spent many years managing his son’s contracts, sponsorship deals and business affairs.
Argentina continue their title defence with a Group J fixture against Austria on Tuesday.
