Lionel Messi sent a heartfelt message to Argentina’s Under-20 team after their loss to Morocco in the FIFA U20 World Cup final in Santiago, Chile.
Messi, who won the same tournament in 2005, used Instagram to encourage the young players after their 2-0 defeat in the final. The Argentina captain followed Diego Placente’s team throughout the competition and praised their determination.
“Keep your heads up, guys!” Messi wrote. “You played an impressive tournament and although we all wanted to see you lift the Cup, we are left with the joy of everything you gave us and the pride of seeing how you defended the blue and white with your hearts.”
Argentina reached the final unbeaten after a series of strong performances, but Morocco were the better side on the night. Yassir Zabiri scored both goals in the first half to seal a 2-0 victory and give Morocco their first-ever youth world title.
Argentina controlled possession for most of the match but failed to break through Morocco’s solid defense. Their defeat ended a promising campaign, though the young Albiceleste received wide praise for their effort and teamwork.
Messi’s message reflected the nation’s emotions – disappointment at the result, but pride in the team’s courage and passion. For Morocco, the win was historic, ending Africa’s 16-year wait for a U20 World Cup champion.
