A Dhaka court has discharged actress Mehazabien Chowdhury and her brother Alisan Chowdhury in a case over Tk27 lakh embezzlement and criminal intimidation.
Dhaka Executive Magistrate Md Adnan Zulfiqar passed the order on Monday after a hearing in the case, said defence lawyer Tuhin Hawlader.
Lawyer Tuhin said his clients appeared before the court to submit their replies. The complainant was also present in the court. “We submitted the reply on behalf of Mehazabien. After hearing both sides, the court ordered their discharge from the case,” he said.
Earlier on 16 November last year, Mehazabien and her brother secured bail after surrendering to court in the case.
According to the case statement, the plaintiff, Amirul Islam, provided Tk27 lakh to Mehazabien through cash and bKash transfers at different times, intending to become business partners based on a previous acquaintance.
After Mehazabien and Alisan failed to initiate business activities over an extended period, Amirul repeatedly sought repayment. The defendants allegedly delayed settlement through prolonged deferment, consistently promising to pay “today or tomorrow.”
The complainant also stated that he went to collect the owed money on the afternoon of 11 February last year. He was then directed to meet at a restaurant near Hatirjheel Road on 16 March.
Upon arrival at the location, Amirul alleged that Mehazabien, her brother, and four to five unidentified individuals subjected him to verbal abuse using obscene language. They reportedly threatened, “Don’t come to our house again asking for money. If we see you in front of the house again, we will kill you,” while issuing various other threats and intimidations.
Following the incident, the victim approached Vatara Police Station, where authorities advised him to file a case in court. Amirul Islam subsequently lodged the case on 24 March under sections 107/117(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure at the Dhaka Executive Magistrate Court.
