A Bangladeshi fisherman sustained injuries in a landmine explosion along the Hoikyang border area of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Monday.
The incident occurred around 10am inside Bangladesh territory between Shahjahaner Dwip and Hansher Dwip on the Naf River, along the Lombabil border of Whykong union.
Injured Mohammad Hanif, 22, son of Fazal Karim of Lombabil area, was taken to Kutupalong MSF Hospital in Ukhiya, where he was given primary treatment. Later doctors referred him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for advanced care.
According to locals and victim’s father Fazal, Hanif went fishing with his net and boat in the Shahjahan’s Island area in the morning when a landmine suddenly exploded, severing his left ankle and causing injuries to the other leg.
They also alleged that the mine had been planted by members of the Arakan Army.
Following the incident, locals became agitated after bringing the injured fisherman back to the area and blocked the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf road, causing traffic congestion.
The blockade was withdrawn after around half an hour, restoring normal traffic movement.
Whykong Union Parishad acting chairman Shahjalal confirmed the incident.
Whykong Police Outpost In-charge Khokon Chandra Rudra, also a sub-inspector, said he had heard about the incident from locals and that police were collecting further details.
Earlier, on Sunday morning, a nine-year-old child named Afnan was critically injured by gunfire allegedly fired from Myanmar in the Techchibridge border area of Whykong.
The child is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU of Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Local residents said gunfights between Myanmar’s rebel group Arakan Army and Rohingya armed groups across the Whykong border have been happening almost every day, leaving people in fear.
Repeated attempts were made to reach Border Guard Bangladesh officials by mobile phone, but they could not be reached for comment.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Imamul Hafiz Nadim said residents in the border areas have been advised to stay cautious and take safety measures amid the ongoing gunfire.
