Bryan Mbeumo scored twice as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 and lift the Snapdragon Cup in Stockholm on Saturday. Michael Carrick’s side dominated long spells of the contest and finally turned their control into goals after the break.
United faced their toughest pre-season test so far and fell behind inside five minutes. Arnau Ortiz’s dangerous cross drifted through a crowded penalty area without a touch and crept inside the far post, leaving Tom Heaton and Harry Maguire rooted as Atletico grabbed an unexpected lead.
Despite the setback, United controlled possession and created the clearer openings before half-time. Patrick Dorgu repeatedly found space down the left but could not produce a decisive final ball, while Ayden Heaven, Leny Yoro and Mbeumo all failed to convert headed chances.
Luke Shaw came closest to an equaliser when he met Shea Lacey’s cross with a powerful volley, only for Jan Oblak to push the effort away. At the other end, Heaton recovered from the opening goal by denying Ortiz a second before the interval.
United’s pressure finally paid off early in the second half after Lacey won a penalty. The young winger burst into the box before Atletico brought him down, allowing Mbeumo to calmly send the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot and restore parity.
The equaliser shifted the momentum firmly in United’s favour. Lacey almost crowned another lively display with a goal of his own, weaving past defenders before forcing substitute goalkeeper Sami Esquivel into a smart save.
Clear-cut chances became scarce as the pace slowed, but United still found the decisive moment with 15 minutes remaining. Jack Fletcher surged down the right wing and delivered a precise pass into Mbeumo’s path. The Cameroon forward finished confidently to complete his brace and seal the comeback victory.
Carrick also handed highly rated youngster JJ Gabriel his senior debut after replacing Mbeumo, giving the travelling United supporters another reason to celebrate during the closing stages.
Atletico almost snatched a dramatic equaliser late on, but Morten Hjulmand struck the post before Rodrigo Mendoza’s header hit the opposite upright moments later.
United held on to secure another encouraging pre-season victory and will now continue their preparations with a friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg next week.
