Real Madrid ended the year with a concern as Kylian Mbappe picked up an injury to his left knee on New Year’s Eve. The club confirmed the news on Wednesday. Madrid now sit four points behind league leaders Barcelona.
In a short statement, Real Madrid said Mbappe has a knee sprain. The club did not give a return date. They said the medical team will watch his recovery closely.
Reports in France suggest the injury could keep Mbappe out for several weeks. L’Equipe said the forward has felt pain in the knee for some time. An MRI on Wednesday showed damage that needs rest and treatment.
Because of the injury, Mbappe missed Madrid’s final training session of the year on Wednesday.
The setback hurts Madrid at a key time. Mbappe has been in strong form this season. Earlier this month, he scored his 59th goal of 2025. That took him level with Cristiano Ronaldo for the most goals by a Madrid player in a calendar year.
The French star joined Madrid from Paris Saint Germain in 2024. He has scored 29 goals this season. Eighteen of them came in La Liga.
Madrid return to action on Sunday after a short break. Mbappe’s absence could slow the team’s push early in the new year.
Madrid will face Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup semi final on January 8 in Jeddah. The final is set for January 11. With little time to recover, Mbappe remains a big doubt for the tournament.
The situation also puts more focus on head coach Xabi Alonso. Reports say the Super Cup games in Saudi Arabia could be important for his future at the club.
