There is no specific information regarding potential sabotage in the capital ahead of August 5, observed as “July Mass Uprising Day,” said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner (Intelligence) Md Shafiqul Islam.
However, he emphasised that the DMP remains on maximum alert and has implemented all necessary security measures for every scheduled programme in the city. The additional commissioner shared these details during a press conference held on Tuesday at the DMP Media Centre.
In response to questions from journalists, Md Shafiqul Islam said, “As of now, we have no specific information about sabotage centered around 5 August. However, since the day is significant, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has taken all necessary security precautions.
“Adequate security will be ensured for the programmes being held at various locations.”
When asked about recent clashes between political parties in the capital, he noted that differences of opinion may exist between political groups, which can lead to conflict. He clarified, however, that such incidents should not be equated with sabotage.
Regarding the recent recovery of bomb-like objects in different parts of the country, he stated that the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit is investigating these cases, while the Detective Branch is conducting a shadow investigation.
He suggested that there may be attempts to create instability, spread public panic, or present Bangladesh as a militancy-related state. “We are investigating these matters with great importance,” he added.
Addressing a recent incident involving a suspicious object at a Metrorail station, he clarified that no explosives were found. The object was, in fact, a container for betel leaf and tobacco.
He mentioned that the matter had been exaggerated, which caused unnecessary panic among the public.
Assuring the residents of the capital, he stated that the DMP remains constantly vigilant. He concluded by saying that the police have adequate preparations to deal with any situation and are taking the necessary steps to ensure the security of city dwellers.
