A multi-dimensional security blanket has been thrown over the capital as Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) moves to ensure public safety and maintain law and order for July Uprising anniversary on 5 August.
To counter potential sabotage or disruptions, the authorities have deployed additional forces, intensified intelligence surveillance, and placed elite specialised units on high alert.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday by Additional Deputy Commissioner Niaz Mehedi of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, security checkpoints – particularly at all entry points to the metropolitan area – have been significantly bolstered as part of a comprehensive protection plan.
As part of the measures, plainclothes officers from Detective Branch (DB) and Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) units will be stationed at key venues.
In areas expecting large public gatherings, specialised teams including SWAT, Bomb Disposal Unit, and Dog Squad will conduct thorough “sweeping” operations.
High-tech monitoring, including CCTV cameras and drones, will be used to oversee all event sites and July Memorial area. Intelligence gathering by City Special Branch (CTSB) and the Internal Affairs Division (IAD) will also be ongoing in plainclothes.
The DMP confirmed that Quick Response Teams (QRT) are on standby for immediate deployment in the event of any emergency.
These efforts are being coordinated with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to maintain a robust security presence on the ground.
Senior police officials will be present in the field to directly supervise and monitor security operations throughout the day.
