Singer and composer Balam is set to return to the album format with ‘Mawla’, his first solo release in a decade, signalling a renewed commitment to music after years focused mainly on singles.
Speaking recently, Balam confirmed that the six-track album is scheduled for release around Eid-ul-Fitr. He said he has completed the title track and finalised most of the compositions and musical arrangements.
Balam said he deliberately chose the album format over single releases to give himself greater creative freedom. He explained that presenting multiple songs together allows him to explore a range of styles while reaching listeners across different age groups. Although each track on Mawla carries a distinct sound, he said melody remains the album’s common thread.
The singer also aims to connect with younger audiences, including Gen Z listeners, through the new release. He said the album balances contemporary elements with the musical identity that long-time fans associate with him.
The title song Mawla marks Balam’s first exploration of Sufi-inspired music. He said the track grew out of personal reflections during the Covid period and continues to feel relevant in the face of ongoing global uncertainty.
Balam has written, composed and arranged all six songs himself. He said he will announce the lyricists at a later date. The album will be released in audio format, with one track also receiving a music video.
Mawla will be Balam’s fifth solo album, following ‘Balam’ (2007), ‘Balam 2’ (2008), ‘Balam 3’ (2010) and ‘Bhubon’ (2013). While those albums established his popularity, he has remained visible in recent years through singles and film songs such as ‘O Priyotoma’ and ‘Rajkumar’.
