Moshiur Rahman Khan, also known as Samrat, the suspected serial killer of Savar, has confessed to his involvement in six consecutive murders before a court and has been sent to prison.
His voluntary confession was recorded by Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag, after which the court ordered his transfer to jail.
CGM Court Inspector Humayun Kabir stated that the accused provided a lengthy statement on Monday night, lasting from the evening until 9:50pm, during which he admitted his role in the six killings.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Arman Ali further clarified that Samrat confessed to committing these six murders over the past four to seven months within the Savar Municipal Community Centre and surrounding areas.
The OC noted that every murder was carried out in the same vicinity using a similar strategy.
Samrat was initially detained by police on Sunday evening in front of the Savar Police Station.
He was later shown arrested following the recovery of two burnt bodies, including that of a teenage girl, from an abandoned building within the Savar Municipal Community Centre. These mysterious and serial killings had previously triggered extreme panic and sensation across the locality.
Police descriptions characterise Samrat as a vagabond who, for the last few years, frequented and stayed overnight near the Savar Model Police Station, the Upazila Health Complex, the Sub-Registrar’s office, the abandoned municipal community centre, and the Pakiza crossing.
The accused has a history of multiple arrests and long-term incarcerations. According to a verified Facebook post by an individual named Rafiqul Islam, who reportedly spent six months with Samrat in Kashimpur Jail, the accused was known as a highly skilled thief who frequently faced punishments.
Islam described him as someone who would talk to himself throughout the day and was a chain-smoker who would collect discarded cigarette stubs from the street when he had none left.
In a related development, the mother and brother of a victim named Tania arrived from Sherpur on Tuesday to file a case at the Savar Model Police Station and to search for her remains. They informed authorities that Tania had been missing for a long time.
SI Bahaj Uddin, a police inspector of the Savar GRO branch, confirmed these developments via telephone on Tuesday.
