BNP Legal Affairs Secretary Badruddoza Badal has dismissed the mass resignation of 18 law officers from the Attorney General’s Office as a politically motivated “stunt”, saying their conduct and public statements reflect political influence rather than principle.
Speaking to journalists in front of the Supreme Court Annex Building on Wednesday, Badal said the resigning officers had served under the current government for nearly four months, receiving salaries, allowances, and other benefits while using their official positions.
“After all this time, they suddenly felt that they needed to resign or be removed. Bringing political issues into the explanation for the resignation is highly undesirable,” he said.
The BNP legal secretary alleged that it should be examined whether these officers actually worked to protect the government’s interests during their tenure. He called on the attorney general to review the cases handled by them over the past four months.
“Did they work for the government or sabotage against it? It is concerning that after receiving salaries, allowances, and benefits from the government, they have resigned and taken a stance against it,” he said.
He claimed that it has not appeared to BNP that they worked to protect the government’s interests while serving at the attorney general’s office.
The 18 law officers, including seven deputy attorneys general and eleven assistant attorneys general, resigned en masse on 23 June. All of them are known to be supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and had been appointed during the previous interim government led by former chief adviser Muhammad Yunus.
Badal said the resigning officers have raised baseless allegations under political influence, adding that such behaviour is not expected from state law officers. He described the step as politically motivated and entirely a “stunt”.
