The controversy surrounding Bangladesh pacer Jahanara Alam’s allegations of sexual harassment has sent shockwaves through the country’s cricket fraternity. The senior cricketer’s emotional revelations have sparked widespread debate and drawn strong reactions from former national team captains Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Mushfiqur Rahim, both calling for justice and an impartial investigation.
Earlier this week, Jahanara alleged in a YouTube interview that she was sexually harassed by Monjurul Islam, the then selector and manager of the Bangladesh women’s cricket team during the 2022 World Cup. She also accused several other officials and players of misconduct, naming former selector Monjurul, the late women’s team in-charge Touhid Mahmud, manager Faiyaz, coach Iman, and players Nigar Sultana Joty, Pinky, Nahida, and Ritu Moni.
Speaking about one incident, Jahanara said, “He (Monjurul Islam) once came to me, placed his hand on my shoulder, and said, ‘How many days has your period been going on? Tell me when it’s over, I need to see for myself. When it’s done and I call you, come over.’”
Monjurul has since denied the allegations, calling them “baseless.”
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the formation of a probe committee, though many have questioned whether it can act independently.
Posting on Facebook on 7 November, Mashrafe urged the board to treat the issue with utmost seriousness:
“I hope the BCB will take every allegation made by Jahanara Alam seriously in the interest of the country’s cricket and the entire sports community. I also hope the investigation committee will work completely free from influence and, if the allegations are proven, ensure appropriate action is taken so such incidents never happen again. Let Bangladesh’s sporting arena be safe for everyone.”
Meanwhile, Mushfiqur Rahim described the issue as “deeply disturbing” and emphasised the need for accountability. On his verified Facebook page, he wrote:
“Recently, I came across some deeply disturbing news circulating within our cricket community. While I may not know both sides of the story or the full truth, I firmly believe that there is absolutely no place for any form of harassment in this world, regardless of who you are or what your gender is. If proven guilty, those responsible must face full accountability and punishment. My support and solidarity are with all the victims who have endured such a difficult experience. May Allah guide us all and grant strength to those affected.”
Earlier, Tamim Iqbal had also voiced his support for Jahanara, urging the government or National Sports Council to form an independent investigation committee free from BCB influence to ensure transparency.
