Mary Egida Rivera, the actress who played Ned Leeds’ grandmother in Spider-Man: No Way Home, has died at the age of 82, writes Deadline.
Rivera passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, in Honolulu. Her death was reported publicly on August 3.
According to TMZ, Rivera suffered a stroke and was placed on life support.
After doctors informed the family that she was unlikely to recover from the coma, they made the difficult decision to withdraw life support.
Rivera portrayed the grandmother of Ned Leeds, played by Jacob Batalon, in the 2021 Marvel blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Her brief but memorable appearance came during one of the film’s most iconic scenes, when Ned and MJ (Zendaya) accidentally summon Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker through a magical portal instead of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
After Garfield’s Spider-Man proves his identity by crawling across the ceiling, Rivera’s character casually asks him—in Tagalog—to remove a cobweb, creating one of the film’s most beloved comedic moments.
The scene also featured Tobey Maguire later joining the multiverse adventure.
Rivera’s obituary noted that she was especially proud of being cast as a Filipino grandmother in the film and of having the opportunity to speak Tagalog on screen.
Her family told TMZ that they encouraged her to audition for the role and said she “lived a good life.”
Mary Egida Rivera is survived by her husband, Alejandro Rivera; her children, Carmela Jones, Paul Rivera, Edwin Rivera, and Angela Kelly; as well as 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
