Spain coach Luis de la Fuente expects Marc Cucurella to keep his unusual promise after La Roja’s World Cup triumph, joking the defender must now tattoo his manager’s face on his body.
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time on Sunday to claim a second World Cup title, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the final.
Before the match, Cucurella vowed he would get a tattoo of De la Fuente’s face if Spain lifted the trophy.
The 65-year-old coach smiled when asked about the promise after the final and insisted his player should honour it.
“I am too old for tattoos, but my players are men of their word and I know they will stick to it,” De la Fuente told reporters.
“They made a mistake and they will stick to it. I am not that ugly.”
De la Fuente, who guided Spain to Euro 2024 glory before adding the World Cup title, also joked about where the tattoo should go.
“Maybe a part of the body where it is not visible,” he said with a laugh. “But when you say something, you have to stick to your word.”
Cucurella has yet to reveal when he plans to fulfil his promise, but Spain’s World Cup victory means the Chelsea defender now has an unusual reminder of one of the greatest achievements of his career.
