Governor Ahsan H Mansur left his office at Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday noon following media reports regarding the appointment of a new governor.
While departing, Mansur clarified that he had not formally stepped down. “I have not submitted a resignation letter,” he stated. “I saw the matter of appointing a new governor in the media. So, I am going home.”
Sources within the Ministry of Finance have indicated that preparations are being made to appoint Mostakur Rahman, a Bangladeshi academic currently teaching at a university in the United States, to the post.
Two officials at the rank of deputy secretary confirmed that the proposal to appoint the expatriate Bangladeshi has been forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office for approval. The proposal has already been endorsed by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
The move to replace the Governor comes during a period of internal unrest, as central bank officials have been actively campaigning for Mansur’s removal.
At 12pm on the same day, officials staged a protest rally at the bank’s headquarters following the issuance of show-cause notices and transfer orders to three staff members.
