The organisation ‘Mancha 24’ has put forward a six-point demand, including the closure of all avenues for political control and influence over the media. These demands were raised during a press conference held on Thursday at the Madhur Canteen premises of Dhaka University.
Fahim Faruqi, the convener of organisation, read a written statement alleging that the country’s media has been “systematically weakened” over the last 17 years. He claimed that a “mal-journalism syndicate” was established through the influence of those in power.
Faruqi stated that this circle has diverted the media from being the voice of the people, instead turning it into a “propaganda machine for power” through falsehoods, misinformation, and character assassination.
Highlighting the historical challenges faced by the press, Faruqi noted instances of obstacles to publishing the truth, harassment of journalists, lawsuits, dismissals, and threats. He further questioned whether the new government is currently rehabilitating these previous circles.
The organisation demanded accountability for media personnel accused of bias, propaganda, and opposing movements. “Media will not be the slave of any political party,” Faruqi asserted, adding that journalism is a struggle for truth and those who “sold this struggle” must be held accountable.
The six-point demands of Mancha 24 include identifying and bringing to justice and accountability all individuals and groups involved in “mal-journalism” and “information terrorism”.
They also called for an immediate end to the harassment and oppression of journalists, ensuring punishment for those responsible, and the removal of “occupier and self-seeking circles” hidden within the media. The organisation warned that they would announce a larger movement if these demands are not implemented.
