A young man and his nephew drowned in a pond while practising swimming in Bamna upazila of Barguna on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Hafez Talimul Islam, 21, and his nine-year-old nephew, Obaidul, son of Mostafizur Rahman. Both were residents of South Amtali village in the upazila.
According to family members, the incident occurred at around 3:30pm when Talimul took Obaidul to a pond beside their home to teach him how to swim.
When the two failed to return after a long time, relatives went looking for them. Finding their clothes on the bank of the pond, family members began searching the water.
They recovered both Talimul and Obaidul unconscious and rushed them to Bamna Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared them dead.
Officer-in-Charge of Bamna Police Station Md Faruq Hossain Khan confirmed the incident.
He said an unnatural death case had been filed with the police station.
“The bodies were handed over to the family without post-mortem examinations following an application from their relatives,” the police official said.
