The first unit of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has successfully completed all essential tests and procedures, including the B-2 stage physics test, according to the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL). The test reports were submitted to Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) on Wednesday, and the unit is awaiting final regulatory approval to begin power generation.
The B-2 stage physics test is a critical safety procedure in nuclear engineering. It verifies the reactor core’s actual physical and neutronic parameters, such as neutron flux distribution and control rod efficiency, against design calculations. This ensures the reactor can be safely controlled and operated before reaching criticality.
NPCBL Managing Director Md Zahedul Hasan said, “All tests and necessary procedures of the B-2 stage of the first unit have been successfully completed. The physics test is also complete. The reports were submitted to BAERA last Wednesday.”
He further said, “The ministry was informed about the progress of the critical stage of the first unit in a meeting with a high-level Russian delegation. If the regulatory body’s approval is received, the unit will enter C Stage. Then the power startup activities will begin.”
Project sources indicated that once the production capacity reaches 25 to 30 per cent, the first unit will begin supplying electricity to the national grid. Accordingly, at least 300 megawatts of electricity are expected to be supplied to the grid by the end of this year.
Starting commercial nuclear power production will make Bangladesh a nuclear power-producing nation, marking a significant milestone for energy security and technological advancement.
Rooppur project, originally scheduled for completion by December 2025, has had its deadline extended twice to June 2028. While the extension itself does not increase costs, the total project cost has risen by approximately Tk26,000 crore due to the increased dollar exchange rate, now standing at Tk1,38,686 crore. The plant consists of two VVER-1200 Generation 3+ reactors being constructed by Atomstroyexport, which will generate a combined 2,400 megawatts of electricity.
