A 28-year-old private firm employee has died after being found critically injured on the Abdullahpur Flyover in South Keraniganj late Tuesday night, in what is suspected to be a mugging incident.
The victim, identified as Tarikul Islam Papon, was discovered lying unconscious and bloodied by passers-by at around 10:30pm on 16 June. He was immediately rescued and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition. Doctors later declared him dead at approximately 12:30am.
Family members said Papon, son of Shafiqul Islam Masud, lived in the Shyampur area of Dhaka. His sudden death has left relatives in shock as they struggle to understand the circumstances leading to the attack.
Eyewitness Imon Ahmed, who was among those who first found the victim, said several pedestrians stopped after noticing a man lying on the flyover in a pool of blood.
“We found him lying in a pool of blood on the flyover,” he said, adding that those involved in the rescue suspected he had been the victim of a mugging, given the condition in which he was found.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed the death and said the body showed signs of multiple stab injuries.
“The body has been kept in the morgue for an autopsy,” Inspector Faruk said, adding that the concerned police station has been informed and an investigation is under way.
Police have not yet confirmed the motive behind the attack, but initial suspicion points towards a violent robbery on the flyover.
